Tips for Staying Secure When Shopping Online

Online shopping is a very convenient way to shop for almost everything; from groceries to home ware and holidays - which is why cyber security is more important than ever. It is tricky knowing which sites you can trust and which sites you should avoid so here are some tips on how you can stay safe and secure when shopping online.

1.       Shop from Sites with SSL Encryption

A fool proof way to make sure that your safety is secured online is to shop only from secure websites. SSL Encryption is secure sockets layer and you should never use a site to pay for anything using your credit/debit card unless it has SSL Encryption. The way to know this is the URL of the site will look like this: ‘https’ rather than just ‘http’. A padlock icon will also appear.

2.       Avoid Public Wireless

If you want to purchase using your phone never do it whilst you’re connected to a public network. It is extremely easy for hackers to gather your details as many of these hotspots don’t encrypt your data, meaning that anyone could see your information. Most importantly avoid making purchases and logging into your online banking app.

3.       Use Credit Cards

If you have a credit card then use it to pay when you’re buying from websites you’ve never shopped from before. Credit cards are usually safer than debit cards as they fall under what’s called the ‘Consumer Credit Directive’. This means your bank is jointly liable with your supplier so that if the supplier doesn’t deliver it isn’t just your problem; it’s the bank’s problem as well. You don’t get this with most debit cards so if you have the choice, use your credit card - but remember to pay on time to avoid interest!

4.       Keep a Record

Don’t forget to note down your purchases and check them against your statements every month. Keep receipts, product descriptions, and copies of all communication with the seller until you get your product and are satisfied with the quality of it. Some places overcharge you so it is very important for you to have enough evidence in case this happens to get your money back.

Keeping safe online is not a difficult job if you are being careful. When making a purchase you’re giving a lot of personal information so really think about the consequences when agreeing to buy anything.
